Explanatory Note Preceding A Renewed Course in Miracles
A Renewed Course in Miracles (ARCIM) is a revision of the complete original A Course in Miracles. For this reason some of the material included in it may be unfamiliar to those who are knowledgeable of the teaching of the Course in editions that do not contain the complete original material. The content of ARCIM also reflects the generalization and inclusion of as much of the original material as possible that initially pertained personally to the co-collaborators of the Course project; some of this material is not included in other versions of the Course. Phrasing may vary from the original wording of the Course due to the use of gender-neutral language and universal spiritual terminology, and the intention of maximal clarity of meaning of the ideas. See the Addenda for details about the complete content in ARCIM of the original Course material and the order of the sections of this Renewed Course, and for Notes 1 and 2 introducing Text Chapters 1 and 2.

Lesson 353. My eyes and ears and mouth, my hands, my feet today have only one purpose: to be given Divine Essence to use to bless the world with miracles.
Lesson 354. We stand together, Divine Essence and I, in Peace and Certainty of Purpose. And in Divine Essence is our Creator, as Divine Essence is in me.
Lesson 355. All the Peace and Joy and all the miracles that I will give are endless, as I accept the Divine’s Word of Truth and Love. Continuing today!
Lesson 356. Sickness is merely another name for separation and sin. Healing is just another Name for the Divine. The miracle is thus a call to the Divine.
Lesson 357. Truth answers every call we make to the Divine, responding first with miracles, and then being present in our awareness as Itself.
Lesson 358. Every call to the Divine must be heard and will be answered. And of this I can be sure: Its Answer is the one I really want.
Lesson 359. The Divine’s Answer is some form of Peace: all pain is healed, all misery replaced with Joy, all prison doors are opened, and all separation and sin are understood as merely a mistake.
Lesson 360. Peace be to me, a holy Child of the Divine. Peace to my sisters and brothers, all of whom are One with me. Let all the world be blessed with Peace through us.

How A Renewed Course in Miracles Came Into Being

Order of Sections and Content of Original Material
The order of the 360 sections of the Text and Manual for Teachers of A Renewed Course in Miracles (ARCIM) is composed of the fifty “Principles of Miracles” (PoM) to begin the Text (each miracle principle and accompanying commentary where present constituting the equivalent of a section for purposes of this explanation), and then 265 additional sections through the end of the Text; and forty-five sections in the Manual for Teachers. (Note that ARCIM does not contain the A Course In Miracles (ACIM) “Clarification of Terms” section following the Manual for Teachers—see note 8 below.) This order of sections in ARCIM, with the 365 lessons of the Workbook for Students placed between the Text and Manual for Teachers in the Course, adheres as closely as possible to the order of the original Course “Notes” and “Urtext” except as follows.
- Given the author and the direct Source of the Course – Jesus and the Holy Spirit respectively – and its contribution to the great awakening of consciousness taking place in humanity, ARCIM includes as much of the original Course material as possible. It does this in part through revising, in terms applicable to the general reader, as much of the material as possible and reasonable that was originally worded personally for the scribe of the Course, Helen Schucman, and her colleague and assistant in the Course project, Bill Thetford, who regularly typed out Helen’s handwritten notes. This inclusiveness stays within Jesus’ mandate for preparing the Course for publication (see “How A Course in Miracles Came Into Being” in the About menu of this website), and has resulted in some material being included in ARCIM that is not in any of the versions of the original ACIM except A Course in Miracles Urtext Manuscripts—Complete Seven Volume Combined Edition (“Urtext Manuscripts” or UrtextM) edition (see “The Need for A Renewed Course in Miracles” in the About menu of this website for more information on the various Course versions).
- ARCIM Text Chapter 2, Section 7, titled “The Meaning of Sex,” consists of passages on this topic compiled from various Text Chapter 1 “Principles of Miracles” commentaries in the original Notes and Urtext, which have been moved to create this new ARCIM Text Chapter 2 section not in this order in the original Notes and Urtext. Certain other “Principles of Miracles” commentaries on the topic of sex remain as PoM commentaries in their original Notes / Urtext order in ARCIM Text Chapter 1.
- The order of the original Notes and Urtext material related to the psychological foundation of miracles in the early part of the Text is slightly changed in ARCIM for clarity of meaning. It may be recalled from the “The Need for A Renewed Course in Miracles” section of this website that this material was given by Jesus at the beginning of the Course project, prior to the writing-scribing process between the author and scribe reaching its state of flow. This lack of flow in the first part of the Text may be experienced by the reader in reading the original material, for instance in the UrtextM edition of the original ACIM. The meaning of this material as originally recorded is also more difficult to follow because it is interspersed with a fair number of lengthy passages directed to Helen and Bill personally. As a result, this material is presented in somewhat different orders even in the UrtextM and A Course in Miracles: Based On the Original Handwritten Notes of Helen Schucman—Complete & Annotated Edition (“Annotated Notes” or ANotes) versions of ACIM, making it unclear what the actual intended order was. Perhaps in part because of these reasons, part of this material was significantly rewritten in the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP) version of ACIM, and another part totally left out of this version. ARCIM has carefully considered all versions of ACIM, and maintained an order in Text Chapter 2, “The Psychological Foundation of Miracles,” as close as possible to the original Notes / Urtext, while striving for maximum clarity of meaning in connection with this important material. See also “Note on Text Chapter 2” in the next section of this page, “Notes.”
- In ARCIM, the Text section titled “I Need Do Nothing” has been placed in its original order indicated in Helen’s Notes, i.e., to what in ARCIM is Text Chapter 25, from where it was moved in all the ACIM versions, i.e., to Text Chapter 18 in the UrtextM, Original / Sparkly, and FIP versions, and Text Chapter 17 in the ANotes version.
- The ARCIM Text has thirty-two chapters, while all versions of the ACIM Text have thirty-one chapters, even those containing the additional material on the psychology of miracles that the FIP version omitted. No material has been added in ARCIM, except as noted in this section, to create this additional Text chapter. While the original material and the order of Text sections is essentially the same in both ACIM and ARCIM, except as noted in this section, the grouping of sections into various chapters in the Text, an editorial decision, is simply slightly different in ARCIM, resulting in an additional chapter. This resulted essentially through the grouping of sections into two shorter chapters rather than one longer one.
- The sections of the Manual for Teachers have been organized into six chapters in ARCIM for clarity of meaning, without the content being affected. (Note that no Manual for Teachers chapters were designated by the editors of any of the ACIM versions.) For consistency of focus, the last three sections in the ARCIM Manual For Teachers Chapter 3: “How Is Healing Accomplished?” have been moved into this chapter from later in the original Notes order of the Manual sections, without effecting the content of these sections. The order of a few other later Manual For Teachers sections has also been slightly changed in the ARCIM Manual from the original Notes order, also for consistency of focus.
- Three additional sections were added to the ARCIM Manual for Teachers through the grouping of three longer sections into six shorter ones, again without affecting the content of these sections. “How Should the Teacher of the Divine Spend Their Day?” has been regrouped into this section and an added section titled, “How Can Safety Be Found?” “How Many Teachers of the Divine Are Needed to Awaken the World?” has been regrouped into this section and an added section titled, “Why Is the Illusion of Many Necessary?” “As for the Rest” has been regrouped into this section and an added section titled, “Benediction.”
- The “Clarification of Terms” section of ACIM, added three years after the 1972 completion of the original Course process and just prior to the 1975-1976 FIP first edition publication, is not in the public domain and is not included in ARCIM. The extensive section, “The Worldview of the Course,” that is part of the Preface of the first edition of ARCIM and is also presented on this website serves as its clarification of the key terms and core principles and premises that comprise the worldview / thought system of the Course. Note that the “Clarification of Terms” section added to ACIM with the first FIP publication was not included in the first – and unofficial – publication of ACIM that preceded the official FIP first edition, i.e., that edition published by the “Freeperson Press / The Foundation for Parasensory Investigation” in San Francisco in 1975. Note also that the Manual for Teachers itself in its penultimate section is described as being a kind of clarification of terms: “This Manual is intended to address only a few of the more obvious questions that both teachers and students of the Divine may have, presented in terms of a brief summary of some of the major concepts in this Course’s Text and Workbook. It is not a substitute for either, but merely a supplement.” While ARCIM does not contain the “Clarification of Terms” section of ACIM, it acknowledges the profound beauty of the content of this section.
- In order to maximize clarity of meaning in ARCIM, certain short explanatory paragraphs have been added to the first part of the Text, with additional ones added to the Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers. The first of these paragraphs immediately precedes Principle of Miracles #1 and is a summary of what a miracle is, a kind of introduction to the PoMs. Additional short clarifying paragraphs can be found in PoM 11 regarding the primacy of prayer in the process of attuning; 19 regarding Divine Essence (Christ) as the Oneness of Creation; PoM 23 regarding the fear of “dark and Light,” an expansion of the concept of the “fear of dark” originally presented; PoM 41 to introduce the concept of “level confusion,” an important idea that is presented without context in the original material, and that as a result may be confusing to some in its original introduction; PoMs 42, 43 and 50; Text sections 2.5, 4.4, 4.7, and 6.4; Workbook lessons 22, 24, 26, 133 and 152; and Manual sections 4.5 and 5.3. While the words of these clarifying additions were not received in the same way as the original material by the scribe of the Course, extreme care has been taken in consultation with the author of the Course to assure that these clarifying thoughts are completely resonant with the total teaching of the Course.
- Regarding the syncing of the original material across all versions of the Course, including ARCIM, the following may be noted. (Regarding the PoMs in general, see also the “Note on Text Chapter 1” in the next section of this page, “Notes.”) The Principles of Miracles in Text Chapter 1 mostly sync across all versions including ARCIM, with some exceptions. The FIP version of the Course is the only one that omits the PoM commentaries where these occur (only eighteen Principles of Miracles – PoMs 1, 2, 6-14, 16, 17, 21, 29, 30, 36, and 43 – do not have commentary in the original material). The FIP version placed some parts of these PoM commentaries later in the Text, and omitted other parts. The FIP placement of some PoM commentaries into other parts of the Text beginning with FIP Chapter 1 Section 2 (immediately following the FIP Principles of Miracles), along with the FIP revision of some of the material on the psychology of miracles that begins in Text Chapter 2 in the other versions, and the omission of other parts of this material, cause the FIP version of the early part of the Text after the Principles of Miracles to be somewhat different than the other versions of the Course including ARCIM. After the Principles of Miracles, it isn’t until Text Chapter 3 (UrtextM and ANotes Section 3, ARCIM Section 2, and FIP Section 1) that the FIP version of the Course essentially syncs up again with the other versions in the same Text chapter.
“A Course in Miracles Version Cross-Reference,” which shows the syncing of all Principles of Miracles as well as all of the Text and Manual for Teachers sections across the UrtextM, ANotes, FIP, and ARCIM versions of the Course, can be found under the Study Materials menu on this website. This cross-reference allows one to locate any Course passage for comparative purposes, regardless of the section title given in any particular version of the Course.
Notes
Note on Text Chapter 1: Principles of Miracles
In the original Course material there are forty-three principles of miracles apparently identified. That is, there are forty-three subsections in the original opening section of the Text called “Principals of Miracles.” The first paragraph of these forty-three subsections is the first miracle principal in the later accepted compilation of fifty principles of miracles, and the first paragraph of the last of these forty-three subsections is the last miracle principle of these fifty. In addition, in the original material these forty-three miracle principles are embedded in lengthy commentaries by the Course’s author, part of which elucidate on and expand the understanding of the principles of miracles presented, and part of which pertain personally to the Course’s scribe, the scribe’s assistant, their relationship, or other topics. Some of the commentary material, along with elucidating on and expanding the obvious miracle principles presented, apparently also contain additional miracle principles. As a result of this mix of ideas, it can be challenging to make clear sense of this original material that begins the journey of the Course because it is not always easy to determine at times what the Course’s author intends for us to take away from it.
As discussed in the “The Need for A Renewed Course in Miracles” section of this website, we know that part of this ambiguity of the original material at the beginning of the Course project was due to resistance to the process on the part of the Course’s scribe. This resistance essentially cleared up already in what became the early chapters of the Text, and from that point on the material flows smoothly and is substantially the same presentation across all versions of the Course, including A Renewed Course in Miracles (ARCIM).
There are, however, some important differences in the presentation of the principles of miracles between versions of the Course, including this one. Because of the less than clear quality of the original material as it initially came through, the scribe of the Course later decided to reformulate some of this opening material, including the principles of miracles, in what became the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP) version of the Course. The apparent forty-three principles of miracles became fifty principles, and the in-depth commentaries to the principles of miracles in the original material were moved to subsequent chapters of the Text or removed altogether. This left a concise presentation of fifty principles of miracles in the FIP version of the Course, some of them not clearly presented as miracle principles in the original material, and with no commentary remaining about any of the miracle principles.
A Renewed Course in Miracles retains the presentation of fifty principles of miracles rather than forty-three, since it is difficult to determine with certainty from the original material exactly what the complete compilation of these principles was intended to be. However, ARCIM draws on all of the previous versions of the complete Course, in collaboration with the Course’s author, to determine its presentation of the fifty principles of miracles. This results in some differences between the fifty principles listed in the FIP version of the Course and the Renewed Course, as also exist between the FIP version and other versions of the original material. In addition, the commentaries to the principles of miracles (other than those commentary passages that were shifted to create ARCIM Text Chapter 2, Section 7, titled “The Meaning of Sex”) have been reinserted immediately following the principles they support, much like other complete versions of the original Course, though also somewhat differently than other versions in order to support the maximum clarity of meaning of the material.
Note on Text Chapter 2: The Psychological Foundation of Miracles
Much of the material in this chapter was omitted from the FIP version of the Course. Perhaps this material was omitted because it was felt that it was part of the author’s – Jesus’ – personal teaching to his collaborators in the Course project, both of whom were psychologists. And certainly the material in this chapter requires careful thought to make sense of for those not formally trained in psychology. However, including this material as part of the total teaching of the Course may be important for at least two reasons.
First is a statement that follows this chapter’s subject matter in the original Course material describing the material’s importance. (A version of this statement is also present in the FIP version of the Course.)
“The next part of this Course rests so strongly on the earlier part that its [i.e., the earlier part’s] study and at least working comprehension is required to understand what follows. Without this, you may become much too fearful when the unexpected occurs to make constructive use of it. As you study the earlier part, you will see some of the obvious implications. One reason a solid foundation is necessary at this point is because of the likely confusion between fear and awe that many people experience when their perception expands out of the narrow bands it has been held in for so long.”
While the reference to “the earlier part” of the Text in the above statement certainly includes the Principles of Miracles which also precede this statement, given the content of the ARCIM Text Chapter 2, “The Psychological Foundation of Miracles” – including such topics as true and false forms of possession, respecting the true power of the mind (the unconscious and its sublevels), and psychic energy, the basic conflict, and the creative instinct – it would seem that this statement and its two references to fear also likely refers to the material in this Text chapter. This indicates that the material presented in ARCIM Text Chapter 2 as “The Psychological Foundation of Miracles” is indeed important for all readers of the Course to study and comprehend, not just those formally trained in psychology. In a sense, the material in this chapter constitutes the essential training for all students of the Course in the spiritual psychology that is the Course’s “language.”
The second reason that this material is important is its author. To receive insight into the essential elements of a new spiritual psychology – elements that form the psychological foundation of miracles – from a teacher who is unsurpassed in understanding the human psyche, is an immeasurable gift to humanity. Including it in the total teaching of the Course honors this gift.
