Corresponding Principles of Miracles

The Text of the Course begins with fifty principles that characterize and summarize what miracles are. Obviously these principles or meanings of miracles are extremely important in a course on miracles, especially given that the term “miracle” in common U.S. English usage has various and diverse meanings, some of them not in alignment with what miracles mean in the context of the Course. As an aide to mastering these principles of miracles (PoMs), it may be helpful to consider them from various perspectives, one of which is presented as follows.

It may be noticed that the first miracle principle (see below), referenced repeatedly throughout the entire Course as the most important one, has a certain distinct alignment or correspondence with the forty-ninth principle (also see below). Both of these principles address the fact that there are no levels or orders of Reality, because Reality has only one Order, that being Oneness Itself. Miracles, being a reflection of Reality in the realm of time, also have no various orders or levels of difficulty in their accomplishment or effectiveness. These two principles (1 and 49) considered together therefore present the idea that every miracle is the same with regard to its ability to transcend the illusion of contrasts of difficulty, and that every misperception is the same with regard to its being able to be corrected by the miracle.

Taking this correspondence as a key to the rest of the miracle principles, the following set of principles of miracles “correspondences” emerges, which can be seen as a kind of cauldron of transformation, with principle of miracles fifty forming the lid of the cauldron, indicating that nothing “escapes” from the cauldron of this world unless it is transformed and aligned with Truth and thereby becomes timeless or eternal. Principle twenty-five, which corresponds with principle fifty, forms the base of the cauldron, reminding us that the basis of this world, despite all appearances, is the Atonement. Indeed, Atonement is not needed outside of this world and its dimensions of time and space. The other corresponding pairs of principles form the “walls” of the cauldron, with principles one and forty-nine forming its “lip.” Principles eleven and thirty-nine could be thought of as forming the handles of the cauldron in their reference to the medium and means of miracles.

The correspondences of the pairs of miracle principles arranged in this way may help us to bring the principles more into our working understanding and practice of becoming miracle-minded and being miracle-ready. Note that the following presentation does not include the commentaries to the principles of miracles, but just the principles themselves as they appear in A Renewed Course in Miracles.

Corresponding Principles of Miracles

Miracle Principle Corresponding Principle
Miracles have two primary aspects, reflecting both Reality and the miracle’s function in the world of illusions.

Miracles as expressions of Love are eternal because Love is eternal, and when Love is shared and expressed in this world, Reality is attuned to and experienced miraculously.

Miracles as intercessions in the world of illusions are responses to calls for help, which indicate that attunement is temporarily not being experienced, and which are therefore always calls for Love.

Miracles in both their aspects, as expressions of Love and intercessions in response to calls for Love, lead to a temporary rearrangement of the components of time and space – which can be perceived as a suspension of the “laws” of the physical world – so that these components can clearly reflect what is beyond them, allowing attunement to be experienced and Love to be expressed.

The Purpose of miracles in both their aspects is that ultimately the belief in time and space can be completely released, and what is beyond them – Creation – can be fully embraced again. In that Instant, Life in Eternity will resume in Its Totality at the point part of It appeared to be paused when the fractured dream of time and space began. Then the only miracle will be again the only miracle that ever was: the Miracle of Love.

50. The miracle brings human creative activity into the Realm of Divine Creation, accepting as true what is in accord with Divine Will and Its Creation, and returning what is discordant, or out of accord, as false and requiring refinement or correction where these would be meaningful.
1. In order to temporarily rearrange the components of time and space, the miracle transcends every law associated with the physical world and is therefore free of all levels and orders of magnitude of difficulty. While each intercession miracle is a unique response to a specific call for help and for the Abundance of Love, with regard to this quality of transcendence miracles are all the same. 49. The miracle makes no distinction among types or variations of misperception. It is a means for correcting perception that is effective quite apart from either the degree or the direction of the error. This is its true transcendence of judgment.
2. Miracles themselves are not what’s important and therefore do not matter. What matters is their Source, Divine Love, which is completely beyond human judgment or appraisal. 48. The miracle is the only means for adjusting time that is available for your use in any situation. Only revelation transcends time, having nothing to do with time at all.
3. Miracles occur naturally as expressions of Love. The Universal Miracle is the intense Love of the Divine that inspires all miracles. In this sense everything that comes from Love is a miracle. 47. The miracle is a learning device that decreases the need for time. It has the unique property of abolishing time by rendering the amount of time needed to learn the lessons the miracle offers unnecessary.
4. Life is the Meaning of miracles, and the Divine is the Giver of Life. The Divine will direct you very specifically through Its Voice, the Holy Spirit. No plans should be made or attempted in intercession miracle situations because you will know all you need to know when you need to know it. 46. Miracles are signs of Love among equals. Those who are equals love and are grateful for, but not in awe of, each other. Miracles are reciprocal because all Members of the Divine Family are equal.
5. For the miracle-minded, miracles as intercessions are impulses under superconscious rather than conscious control. Consciously-selected intercession miracles are prone to errors in human understanding, which will cause some intercession miracles to be attempted to be performed where not needed and others to be withheld where needed. 45. The miracle is an expression of an inner awareness of Divine Essence and the acceptance of Its Atonement.
6. Miracles reflect Reality and are therefore genuinely natural. They occur when attunement with the Divine is experienced. When they do not occur then attunement is needed, and called for. 44. A miracle is never lost. It may touch many people you do not even know, and produce undreamed of changes in situations, circumstances and structures of which you are not aware.
7. Miracles are part of your Divine Inheritance, but right-mindedness, or being at least temporarily free from judgment and therefore from fear, is necessary to allow miracles as intercessions to be performed through you. Right-mindedness is a kind of purification of thought. 43. Miracles arise from a miraculous state of mind. Being One, this state of mind is shared by anyone who chooses to experience it, even without the personal awareness of the miracle worker.
8. Miracles as intercessions are healing because they supply what is actually needed to those who believe themselves to be in a state of lack. Miracles are performed (or assisted) by those who are in access to Abundance for those who have temporarily forgotten this access. 42. Miracles release you from your erroneous sense of isolation, deprivation, and lack. They are Affirmations of your Heritage in the Divine Family, which is a State of Completion and Abundance.
9. Miracles are an exchange in which both the miracle assister and receiver emerge with more awareness of Love’s Presence. As with all expressions of Love, which are always miraculous in the true sense, this exchange transcends the physical “law” that asserts that where something increases something else must decrease. 41. Through miracles you perceive Wholeness. Miracles thus correct, or atone for, the faulty perception of scarcity and lack.
10. Miracles are expressions of trust in one another. Their intercession aspect is misunderstood when regarded as a spectacle to induce belief. Those who assist in miracles with understanding do not draw attention to themselves. 40. The miracle acknowledges everyone as your sisters and brothers and mine [Jesus']. Miracles confirm the universal holiness of all Children of the Divine.
11. Attuning to the Divine (such as through prayer, presencing, meditation, and mindfulness) is the medium of miracles. Attuning is the natural Communication of the Created with the Creator. The Presence of Love is known through attuning, and expressed through miracles. 39. The spiritual eye is the means of miracles because it beholds both the creations of the Divine and human creative activity. Within human creative activity, the spiritual eye sorts out what is truly creative from what is not by its ability to perceive totally rather than selectively.
12. Miracles are the effects of thought. Thought captivated by illusion makes the world that is perceived as physical, but true Thoughts are the Divine’s and create the real world as well as its Source, the Realm of Heaven. We believe in the world we make up, while we know what is created with true Thoughts. 38. A miracle is a corrective dynamic introduced into false thinking by me [Jesus]. It acts as a catalyst, dissolving the erroneous framing of perception so that accurate perspective can be established. This dynamic places you under the Atonement Principle – Love – where your mind is healed.
13. Miracles are both beginnings and endings, and thus transcend time. Each miracle is complete in itself – a beginning of Limitlessness through being an ending of the past – generating nothing requiring future corrective action. In their timelessness miracles are affirmations of rebirth, undoing the past in the present and thus releasing the future. 37. The spiritual eye can only see Truth. The miracle dissolves error because the spiritual eye cannot see error and thus error has no reality. This is the same as saying that where there is Light, darkness, being the absence or lack of Light, automatically disappears.
14. Miracles bear witness to the truth about Reality, which is Its Perfection. This truth is trustworthy and convincing because of its Source. Without trust and confidence miracles may be experienced as trickery or enchantment. 36. Miracles are examples of right thinking. Through miracles, contact with Reality at each level of awareness becomes accurate and strong, permitting the correct understanding and honoring of all appropriate personal and interpersonal boundaries.
15. You would do well to begin each day by devoting it to allowing whatever miracles are asked of you that day to be performed through you. Each day and every moment is a new opportunity to use time miraculously. 35. Miracles are the way in which minds that are guided by Spirit unite with Divine Essence for the awakening or Release of all the Divine’s Children.
16. A miracle is a Spark of Life. It shines through darkness and brings in the Light, helping you to forget illusion and remember Truth. It simultaneously increases the reserve of Strength in the giver and supplies the Strength that is lacking in the receiver, demonstrating that it is as blessed to give as to receive. 34. Each miracle restores the mind temporarily to its Fullness of Spirit. By restoring Abundance, miracles establish perfect Protection. The Radiance of Spirit’s Presence leaves no room for intrusions.
17. A miracle is an instantaneous shift away from the world of illusions and into the real world, where time and space perceive Reality. In this shift the body is transcended, which is why miracles facilitate the healing of the mind—the only thing that can and need be healed. A healed mind automatically results in a body free of the illusion of infirmity. 33. You are an expression of Love, and miracles honor Love through you. Through miracles you behold the Light in everyone and thus dispel illusions that you hold about yourself and others. This undoes your errors by freeing you from your own nightmares.
18. A miracle is the greatest service you can offer to another. It is a way of loving your sisters and brothers as yourself. Those who offer miracles recognize their own and their sisters and brothers’ inestimable Worth simultaneously. 32. Divine Essence inspires all miracles, which alter the content of your perceptions to remind you of your holiness. They place you beyond all physical laws, raising you into the Sphere of Divine Order. In this Order you are perfect, and you know your Perfection.
19. Miracles dispel the illusion of separation and affirm the Oneness of all minds. All genuine accomplishments depend on cooperation, and true cooperation depends on miracles. 31. Miracles celebrate the Divine through those who assist and are touched by them. They express gratitude to the Divine by honoring Its Children, affirming their Perfection.
20. Miracles rest on the Laws and Order of Eternity, not the arch of time. They reawaken the awareness that the spiritual rather than the physical – the spirit rather than the body – is the Abode and Altar of Truth, and therefore of Reality. This is the awareness that leads to the healing power of miracles. 30. Miracles allow Spirit to perceive through you, which adjusts all levels and dimensions to be seen in proper alignment. This recognizes that Spirit is at the Center, where beings communicate directly, without separation.
21. Miracles rearrange the ordering or sequencing of perception, placing its levels: concept and percept, in their true perspective. This correct ordering demonstrates that perception is always the effect of and thus results from thought. This recognition heals at all levels, because all appearance of unwellness comes from confusing the levels. 29. By allowing miracles to be performed through you, the levels of your awareness: the conscious, subconscious, and superconscious, and the sub-levels of your subconscious, are placed in their right relationship to each other.
22. Miracles overcome the apparent density and frailty of the body. The body should be regarded as a temporary home as airy as a cobweb that can be dispelled with just a slight breeze. Miracles are also as light as cobwebs but as strong as the Foundation of Eternity on which they rest. 28. Miracles are a way of bringing about release from fear. Revelation leads to a state of mind in which fear has already been dissolved. In this sense miracles and revelation work together, miracles being a means and revelation an end.
23. Miracles depend on the affirmation of the spiritual eye, which is always full of Light. This Fullness inspires Joy unless there is fear of dark or Light. 27. Every miracle is a universal Blessing from the Divine through me [Jesus] to all my sisters and brothers.
24. Miracles are of a different dimension of time in which even the tide can wait. They can heal the sick and raise the dead because death and dis-ease, or stress, are projections of fear and do not exist in Reality, nor where miracles abide. 26. Miracles are part of an interlocking Circle of Forgiveness. When this Circle becomes complete then the Atonement will be fulfilled in time. The Process of Atonement works all the time and in all the dimensions of time.
25. Miracles are natural expressions of the Divine’s Total Forgiveness – the Atonement – which is complete in Eternity. Through miracles you affirm your acceptance of the Divine’s Forgiveness by extending It to others. This acceptance and extension is each one's part in the Atonement.
