What Is Awakening? (Lessons 231-240)

Awakening is a Promise, made by the Divine, that you would find your way Home to It at last. This Promise must be kept. It guarantees that time will have an end, and all the thoughts that have been born in time will end as well. The Divine’s Word of Truth and Love is given every mind that thinks it has separate thoughts, and will replace these thoughts of conflict with the Thought of Peace.

The Thought of Peace was given to the Divine’s Children the instant that their minds had thought of conflict. There was no need for such a Thought before, for Peace was given without opposite, and merely was. But when the mind is split, there is a need of healing. So the Thought that has the Power to heal the split became a part of every fragment of the mind that still was One, but failed to recognize its Oneness. Now it did not know itself, and thought its own Identity was lost.

Awakening is undoing in the sense that it does nothing, failing to support the world of dreams and malice. Thus it lets illusions go. By not supporting them, it merely lets them quietly disappear into nothingness. And what they hid is now revealed: an Altar to the holy Nature and Name of the Divine whereon Its Word is written, with the gifts of your forgiveness laid before It, and the Memory of the Divine all around.

Let us come daily to this Holy Place and spend a while together. Here we share our final dream. It is a dream in which there is no sorrow, for it holds a hint of all the Glory given us by the Divine. The grass is pushing through the soil, the trees are budding now, and birds have come to live within their branches. Earth is being born anew in clear perception. Night has gone, and we have come together in the Light.

From here we give awakening to the world, for it is here awakening is received. The Song of our rejoicing is the Call to all the world that Freedom is returned, that time is almost over, and the Divine’s Children have only an Instant more to wait until all dreams are done, Eternity has shined away the world, the Creator has taken Its final Step, and only Heaven now exists at all.

What can I seek for, Creator, but Your Love? Perhaps I thought I sought for something else, a something I have called by many names. Yet is Your Love the only thing I seek, or ever sought. For there is nothing else that I could ever really want to find. Let me remember You. What else could I desire but the Truth about myself?

 

This is your will, my sisters and brothers. And you share this will with me, and with the One as well Who is our Creator. To remember the Divine is Heaven. This we seek. And only this is what it will be given us to find.

Chapter 22: True Reason and the Final Question

 

4. Beyond the Fear of Seeing Within

The Holy Spirit will never teach you that you are sinful. Errors It will correct, but this is no cause of fear. You are indeed afraid to see within because of your terror to perceive the sin or irredeemable flaw the ego has taught you is there. This you would not be fearful to admit. Fear in association with sin or flaw the ego deems quite appropriate, and smiles approvingly. It has no fear to let you feel ashamed. It doubts not your belief and faith in separation and sin. Its temples do not shake because of this. Your faith that sin will be found at your inner Altar only witnesses to your desire that it be there to perceive.

However, this merely seems to be the source of fear. Remember that the ego mindset is not the only perspective in your mind. Its rule is tempered by the Presence of the Holy Spirit there. And the ego fears its unknown “enemy,” whom it cannot even perceive.

Loudly the ego urges you not to see within yourself, for it promises that if you do, your eyes will behold your sinful nature, and the Divine will strike you blind for your iniquity. This you secretly believe, and so you do not behold within. Yet this lie is not the ego’s hidden fear, nor yours who honor it. Loudly indeed the ego claims it is. Too loudly and too often. For underneath this constant shout and frantic proclamation, the ego is not certain it is so. Beneath your fear to see within because of your belief in separation and sin is yet another fear, and one which does make the ego tremble. What if you saw within and beheld no separation or sin? This “fearful” question is one the ego never asks. And you who ask it now are threatening the ego’s entire defensive system as a frame of mind too seriously for it to bother to pretend it is your friend.

Those who have joined their sisters and brothers in holy relationships have detached themselves from their belief that their identity lies in the ego. A holy relationship is one in which you join with what is part of you in Truth. And through this relationship your belief in separation has already been shaken, nor are you now entirely unwilling to see within and behold that what you feared is not there. Your liberation still is only partial, still limited and incomplete, yet it is born within you. Now that you have recovered part of your sanity, you have been willing to observe much of your insanity, and recognize its source within your mind. Your faith is moving inward, beyond insanity, and on to Reason. And what your Reason tells you now the ego wants you not to hear.

The Holy Spirit’s Purpose was accepted by the part of your mind that the ego knows not of. You had forgotten it too. And yet this part, with which you have now begun to identify, is not afraid to observe itself. It knows that it is holy. How otherwise could it have been willing to see the Holy Spirit’s Purpose as its own? This part of your mind has seen your sisters and brothers since time began and perception was born, and recognized them perfectly. And it has desired nothing but to join with them and to be whole and free again, as once it was. It has long been waiting for the acceptance of Release and the birth of Freedom to come to you. And now you recognize that it was not the ego that joined the Holy Spirit’s Purpose, and so there must be another part of your mind that has joined It.

Think not that this is madness, for this joining is what Reason tells you must be real, and therefore dependable. And this follows perfectly from what you have already learned. There is no inconsistency in what the Holy Spirit teaches. This is the Reasoning of the Sane. You have now perceived the ego’s madness, and not been made afraid, because you did not choose to share in it. At times it still deceives you. Yet in your saner moments its ranting strikes no terror in your heart. For you have realized that you do not even want the “gifts” it threatens to withdraw from you in rage at your “presumptuous” wish to see within. A few remaining trinkets still seem at times to shine and catch your eye. Yet you would not “trade” Heaven to have them.

And now the ego is afraid. But what it hears in terror the other part of your mind hears as the sweetest Music, the Song it has longed to hear since first the ego came into your mind. The ego’s weakness is your spirit’s Strength. The Song of Freedom, which sings the Praises of another world, brings Hope of Peace to your spirit. For It remembers Heaven. And now the mind sees that Heaven has come to Earth at last, from which the ego’s rule has kept It out so long. Heaven has come because It found a home in your relationship on Earth. And Earth can hold no longer what has been given Heaven as Its Own.

Behold each other gently, and remember the ego’s weakness is revealed in the vision you share. Whom the ego would keep apart have met and joined, and they perceive the ego without fear.

My sisters and brothers, innocent of unholiness, follow in gladness the Way to Certainty. Be not held back by fear’s insane insistence that sureness lies in doubt. This has no meaning. What matters it to you how often and loudly it is proclaimed? The senseless is not made meaningful by repetition and by clamor. The quiet Way is open. Follow It happily, and be certain in what must be so.
