Chapter 5: Student / World Questions
4. What Is Justice?
Justice is the Divine’s Correction for injustice. Injustice is the basis for all the judgments of the world. Justice corrects the interpretations to which injustice gives rise, and cancels them out. Neither Justice nor injustice exists in Heaven, where error is impossible and correction meaningless. In this world, however, forgiveness depends on Justice, since all judgment and its results can only be unjust.
Justice is the Holy Spirit’s one Interpretation of all things in the world, which is that all things here are for awakening from the world. Outside of Spirit’s Interpretation is Justice impossible, for no one still in this world is capable of making only just interpretations and laying all injustices aside. If the Divine’s Children were fairly valued by each other, there would be no need for awakening for there would be no dreams and no world. The thought of separation would have been forever inconceivable.
Justice, like injustice, is an interpretation. It is, however, the one Interpretation that leads to Truth. This becomes possible because, while It is not true in Itself, Justice includes nothing that opposes Truth. There is no conflict of any kind between Justice and Truth. One is simply the first small step in the direction of the other. The Path becomes quite different as one goes along. Nor could all the magnificence, the grandeur of the scene, and the enormous opening vistas that rise to meet one as the Path of Awakening is trod be foretold from the outset. Yet even these, whose splendor reaches indescribable heights as one proceeds, fall short indeed of all that awaits one when the journey is completed and time ends with it. But somewhere one must start. True Justice is the beginning.
All worldly concepts of your sisters and brothers and yourself, all concerns about the past and fears of future states, stem from injustice. Here is the lens that, held before the body’s eyes, distorts perception and brings witness of a distorted world back to the mind that made the lens and holds it very dear. Selectively and arbitrarily is every concept of the world built up exactly in this way. Mistakes become “sins” or irredeemable flaws and are perceived and justified by careful selectivity in which all thought of Wholeness must be lost. Forgiveness has no place in such a scheme, for every error seems forever true. Atonement’s graceful Correction of all things in time to restore Eternity cannot be conceived or accepted through the lens of injustice.
Awakening is the Divine’s Justice. It restores to your awareness the Wholeness of the fragments you perceived as broken off and separate. And it is this that overcomes the fear of death, for separate fragments must decay and die, but Wholeness is immortal. It remains forever and forever like Its Creator, being One with It.
Spirit’s Final Evaluation and the Divine’s Final Judgment are true Justice. Onto this – an Evaluation based entirely on Love, a Judgment wholly lacking in condemnation – is injustice attempted to be mis-projected, attributing to the Divine the lens of warped perception through which the world is looked upon. Now it is believed that injustice belongs to the Divine and not to the one looking through the lens. The separated ones thus become afraid of their Creator, not understanding that they fear and oppose only their holy Self as foe.
Pray for the Divine’s Justice, and do not confuse Its Mercy with any madness remaining in your mind. Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to perceive. Remember this. In this fact either Heaven or hell is found, as you elect. Spirit’s Interpretation and Evaluation point to Heaven just because Spirit is entirely impartial. It accepts all evidence that is brought before It, omitting nothing, and assessing nothing as separate and apart from all the rest. From this one Standpoint does It interpret and evaluate, and this alone. Here all fear, opposition and condemnation become meaningless and indefensible.
Perception rests, the mind is still, and Light returns again. Vision is now welcomed. What had been lost has now been found and restored. The Peace of the Divine embraces all the world, and we can see. And we can see!
