Chapter 3: Oneness and Irreconcilability
3. Total Attributes and Total Commitment
It is important to remember that many of the basic concepts referred to throughout this Course are not matters of degree, because certain fundamental concepts can’t be meaningfully understood in terms of polarities coexisting. For instance, it is impossible to conceive total darkness, or the absence of light, where light is present, or to conceive everything and nothing as joint possibilities. Such mutually-exclusive possibilities mean that only one or the other can be true, and that if one is true then the other must be false. When the illusions of time and space are removed from the consideration, then only one of each pair of such mutually-exclusive possibilities must be true in Reality. Clearly “Light” and “Everything” – among other such Qualities or Attributes of Creation – must be true as opposed to darkness and nothing. It is absolutely essential that you understand completely that behavior will be erratic until a firm commitment is made to one or the other set of possibilities of Creation as core principles beyond time and space.
A total commitment to darkness or nothingness is impossible. No one has ever lived who has not experienced some Light and some part of Everything. This has made everyone really unable to deny Truth totally, even if a person deceives themself in this connection most of the time. That is why those who live largely in darkness and emptiness never find any lasting solace, and also why those who live with only partial awareness of Light and Everything are also not content.
Innocence is also not a partial attribute. It is not real unless and until it is total, i.e., until it is One with Divine Essence. When it is partial, it is characterized by the same erratic nature that holds for other qualities that have become polarized in time and space. The partly innocent are apt to be quite naïve at times. It is not until their innocence is a genuine viewpoint that is universal in its application that it becomes wisdom. Innocent (or true) perception means that a person chooses not to perceive illusion. More simply, it means that a person always perceives the Real World.
Whenever you lack confidence in what another person will do, you are attesting to your belief that they are not in their right mind. Such lack of faith in your brother or sister is hardly a miracle-based frame of reference. It also has the disastrous effect of inappropriately denying the essentially creative Power of the miracle. The miracle perceives everything as it really is. If nothing but the Truth really exists (falseness and Truth being another polarity only one of which can exist in Creation), then right-minded perception, or seeing, cannot perceive anything but Perfection. This Course has stated many times that only what the Divine creates, or what the human being creates with the same Will, has any real being. This, then, is all that the innocent can perceive. They do not suffer from the delusion of separation.
The way to correct all delusions is to withdraw your attention and allegiance from them and invest these only in what is true. To whatever extent you permit or side with false perception in yourself or others, you are validating some basic delusion. Yet it is not possible to validate the invalid, so really a blank emptiness is happening when you attempt to do so. I suggest that you voluntarily give up all attempts to do so, because they can only result in turmoil. If you are willing to validate what is true in everything you perceive, which is the only thing that can be validated, or shown to be truly Valid, you will render it true for yourself.
Remember that Truth overcomes all error. This means that if you perceive truly, you are canceling out misperceptions in yourself and others simultaneously. Because you will then see others as they were truly created and as they can therefore truly create, you offer them your own validation of the Truth in them. This is the real healing that the miracle actively facilitates.
